this seems to be a big thing to my mind.
end of life Li battery can be "recycled" in a way that makes it good to go
without complete degeneration in simple elements.

maybe if we now start designing (Li battery) chemistry for
this process it could be a big step towards low raw material input
R.E. energy storage.

I care about this sort of thing, we need something that scales to global dimensions
if we will ever get off the FF teat and stop increasing CO2 levels in our
one and only atmosphere.

As battery chemistries evolve, with now cheaper and more abundant Na compounds being introduced, their main constituents are carbon and aluminum neither being in short supply, along with a little sodium based electrolyte like NaPF6.
If Lithium based cells are on the path of an "Old" technology, there may be little incentive in attempting a mass re-cycling program, as the reclaimed material may have little usage.
Not sure what's going to happen with the millions of old batteries that will become available in the next 15 years as current ones fail; It's a bit of a worry.

There is a new recycling plant in Victoria but I think it uses the old method of reducing the cells to granules or powder for further chemical processing.
