Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi All Just like to sound out here if any one has come up with a way to protect regulators against the battery being disconnected while the solar is still connected. I have found that although you can always tell people to disconnect the solar before working on the batteries, it still happens, either accidentally or they forget. Hell I have done it myself. I have to date always got away with it but manufactures give warning against it. A simple protection is a relay supplied from the battery disconnecting the panels but may not be fast enough. Also would like to get comments on the design of controllers that don’t have a common negative. In the past I have often commoned the negatives at the battery so the system can be earthed now days I cannot earth the panels and need to run full +ve -ve wires to the regulator. Herb

Hi Herb, You are right about the regulator exposed to over voltage as you disconnect the battery. I'll upload something shortly that might help. You don't have success until you've tried it!
