Hi,

Coles will sell you a USB+WiFi NextG stick for $10 if you buy $30 worth of groceries. No problem in setting it up, it is idiot proof so even I can set up a Wifi network; my Huawei tablet is Wifi only, i.e., it does not have a broadband connection via NextG.

This stick comes with an SSID, encryption type and password on a label. I would call this a Wifi "sender". My mobile connects to it, no problems.

Contrast this with the TP-Link Wifi dongle I bought; I had used up the 1GB one gets with the Coles dongle and besides, I wanted the PC to talk Wifi.

No SSID was hardwired into it and no SSID could be "forced" into it via the setup software. I would call this a Wifi "receiver only" of an existing network because when I set my mobile up as a Wifi hotspot the TP-Link dongle would recognise the connection and it appeared as a connection in the setup menu.

Q.: When buying a Wifi dongle in order to set up a Wifi network with the PC then being the network's "master" or sender and any Wifi-equipped mobiles then being the "slaves", how does one tell the sales man in technical terms what one wants? Or would my Windows 7 on the PC have allowed me to "christen" the dongle with its SSID? As I had spent three hours just to get the software loaded and then had to get Dr Google's help I gave up and got my money back. Suspect Windows 32bit/64bit problems with TP-Link's software.
