noticed you run some nicad battery packs for your 12v outdoor lighting so are nicads a good battery to run as a house battery pack @50.4v 450Ah?

I would say no. Couple of reasons. They need a more complicated charge cycle than lead acids. And they are going to be a pain to get rid of, cause they contain cadmium, which is very nasty to the environment and people.

I was given my battery bank, and they have been good to date, needing the water topped up occasionally. I'm being gentle to them, only a light load and light charge each day. But I would not buy a set from new.

thanks Glenn,these nicads are stainless steel case models and $600 to buy.maybe ill put that money into a new set of trojen t105re batteries and only weld when the sun is shinning with plenty of recovery time between welds

I get car batteries free from quite a few places and trade them for good batteries behind the local auto parts house battery pile. My buddy works there. I give them more batteries than I take. I check batteries using a U shaped 12 gauge house wire 18 inches long stripped on the ends. Put on my safety glasses, hold one end on a post & move the other end over the other post fast. If it's arc welding hot after sitting outside for weeks, it's a battery that will take and hold a charge. What else do you need? Nothing. I can build a 10 battery setup = 120 volts any time I want for free.
