a different league, but this happened about 200m from where I used to live, and not for the first time. https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-the-cargo-ship-lagik-wrecked-in-the-river-nene-at-sutton-bridge-december-23043852.html https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-sutton-bridge-ship-removed-106539312.html Years ago a sailing ship did the same and the harbour master had it dynamited after the owner failed to move it. |

I see they have refloated her. That's almost record time I think. Normally, refloating a grounded ship is a very delicate and potentially dangerous(to the ship) process. I personally expected it might have taken them weeks to move the big bastard. But then, I guess sand is relatively soft(compared to grounding on rocks), so if you can dig her out enough at the bow.... That seems to be what they did, after they got the stern back into the canal and away from the sand on that side. There are videos up now on YouTube of her slowly making her way out of the narrow part of the canal, to a wider area where they will do a full inspection, so the BBC video stated. That clears the canal for the backlog of about FOUR HUNDRED ships waiting to pass through. Will take a few weeks to clear that backlog I think! ![]() She was listing slightly to port once refloated. ![]() Hopefully, it is simply unequal ballast, as I think they emptied the ballast tanks to try to make her lighter and therefore easier to move. I think they might have also offloaded some fuel for the same reason. But in any event - good work Suez Canal people and salvagers! ![]() Look at how long it took to refloat the Costa Concordia. But then, the CC was capsized and 50% or so sunk so that added to the complications I guess. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |
