Have you considered Bluetooth? There is zero software overhead because you use a UART as if it was hard-wired. The HC-05 and HC-06 are easy to work with.

I actually haven't thought about Bluetooth, thanks for the tip. Maybe I already have some HC-06 modules lying around somewhere.
