I thought this video was excellent. ![]() ![]() LINK.... The bit on the Linux filesystem was most interesting - that ANYTHING can be a folder. NOT just drives, but all the devices in the system also. I knew that of old, but anyone NEW to Linux, WOULD find that concept confusing - as did I when I first played with Linux back in the 90's with the likes of Red Hat and Lindows distros. But the idea that you can just copy some text, to the FOLDER that represents a serial port, and Linux will squirt it out of that serial port, with no need for any kind of serial-port interface software...... Elegant. OK, I am simplifying it a little, but I expect you get it. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

That's excellent! :) Thanks. Yes, this is the thing. Linux is *different*, not necessarily *difficult*. Changing from Windows to Linux is similar in many ways to changing from the Apple ecosystem to the Windows one. Some things are different, many are the same. I agree with his comments on getting help. It can be difficult. That's why I love what MX Linux have done - I wish other distros would copy that. Mind you, Linux has its own help system from the terminal. man <command> will often bring up something useful and can be very verbose sometimes! I've not had a chance to check the video but usually FOLDER means what is of-old called a directory and you would not be able to make it also a serial port (or any device). However, any FILE can be a serial port (or any device). (A FILE being a leaf node of the file system tree that isn't a directory.) John Edited 2025-05-13 19:09 by JohnS |

Yes, MX Linux is currently the Linux that I am most in love with. ![]() ![]() I just have to work out how to get Vbox installed, but I will continue to document that in the other thread. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

I would never want to take you that, but a very common thing about the main distros is: It only depends, if you like the look and feel of the Desktop design and art work. And for me is is also important, which package management system they are using - Debian - Redhat - Slackware - Gentoo But if you install some package "vi" on one or the other system makes no difference as all the companies compile working binaries. The source of the binaries is more or less the same you can say. In detail its not the same as the packages packed by e.g. Ubuntu are individually modified if Ubuntu is interested in. same for RedHat which is commercial only since long ago. Now the companies usually support best Ubuntu(.deb) and RedHat(.rpm) Debian is the founder of all but not commercial and very conservative. So MX, MINT and Suse e.g. are only sub-companies using 1:1 the main sources from the big the are underlying Look at that :)) I'm not referring to the data but to the pure amount of distros there are The technical main decision would thus be, which of the big I'm tending to. I know Mint very well now and can say, that everything which is made to run under Ubuntu runs under Mint as well without any difference. I guess most of the "sub-companies" are no companies but a bunch of people having fun Edited 2025-05-13 21:26 by dddns |
