If you want dark skies,
Halfway across the Nullabor Plain is fantastic if you park well off the highway and the weather is kind.

Where I used to live in central Tasmania was nearly as good (no street lights and not many neighbours)

Envy...
In this part of the UK dark skies are a memory. Too much light from large towns and cities and, additionally, our area is relatively low and we get a lot of cloud (especially when there are any astronomical events of interest!). I wouldn't recommend astronomy as a hobby round here, although there is a telescope on Moor Park in Preston. It's in the "urban" light level category.
