Has anyone set up it on a Linux Mint system and set MMEdit as the editor? If so, pointers?

I can try it tomorrow and give you a feedback.
I've been using VSCode, that is a pretty good editor and it is multiple platform

Regarding git, just use sudo apt install git on the terminal to install it.

Talking about the terminal, take a look at Oh My Zsh

I like to use git on the terminal, but there are plenty of visual tools if you are not familiar with the git commands. VSCode has a visual interface to deal with git as well

Yes, I have LMDE6 and am running MMEDIT without any issues.

Download the Linux package, unzip it somewhere.
Enter the folder, right-click on the "MMEdit" file, click PERMISSIONS tab, make sure there is a tick in the "Allow executing file as a program" check-box, click CLOSE to exit, then just double-click to run.

To put an icon on the desktop, right-click the destop, select "Create a new launcher here...", then click BROWSE, find the MMEdit file, click it, then click on OK when done.

Double-click the icon to run MMEdit.

To change the icon, right-click the new icon, select PROPERTIES, click the little icon image on the left, browse to the MMEDIT folder, select the "mme.ico" then click CLOSE, and the desktop icon will be the "Official" MMEdit one.

Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!
