Hello everyone!

As I mentioned in a previous post, and after what feels like an eternity, here is the humble beta of my “retro” adventure game for the PicoMite VGA RP2040, which is what originally brought me to your site and introduced me to MMBASIC, which I still find just as interesting.

ravenloft_b1.zip

This is really just a prototype. I went from a very rudimentary way of defining the rooms (one SUB per room) to a proper “game engine” that Claude made for me... After I miserabyly fail to do it by myself or with the help of previous version of Claude or Chatgpt, the thing changed quickly it's very impressive.

I’m genuinely impressed by what AI can do, and honestly, it’s almost disappointing that I don’t really understand what I’m doing anymore. In fact, an AI is translating this message from French for me, just to give you an idea!

Anyway:

- The modfile was made by my little brother (he's into musics and all those things I cant bear), and we’re only just beginning to understand all the possibilities offered by PLAY MODFILE and PLAY MODSAMPLE.

- The adventure itself is a bit rough around the edges... I need to rework it

- The graphics were created as we went along and are not all of the same quality... I’m considering redoing everything.

- We’re already working on another project using this “home-made with AI” game engine, and I’m open to any suggestions!

- Should work on any version of mmbasic or platforms since it use very little code option. Use OPTION MODBUFF ENABLE 192 if PLAY MODFILE return a error. Remember : in no way i'm a experienced coder like most of you are

Thanks again to this great community!

PS : I'm Looking to buy the new pico computer 3 you guys made, is there any available to be send to france ? A single one would be enough to me. MP me !

Thanks for sharing Jules, I took it for a spin and there is definitely an interesting starting point there.

Best wishes,

Hi JulesO,

Looking nice.

You can make the text clearer (in the pictures) by choosing text color. Although VGA is in essence monochrome, there are color tiles. When you use font 1, the tiles are adapted to exactly the size of the text, and are used o provide colored text (like in the editor). With foreground color yellow, and background black, you get yellow text in the otherwise black and white picture. Use the TEXT command, not PRINT, and align coordinates to x*8, Y*12

example
TEST 120,120,"Bonjour JulesO",,1,1,RGB(YELLOW),RGB(BLUE)

Regards,

Thanks for the responses
Next step will be better I hope, this is more a POC than a real game, i somewhat get lost in the way and did not really well in story telling or even explaining a bit what's going on.

Thanks a lot ! That was the main goal. I want to stay in this path.

I really like the one from the menu :

It started with AI to generate the image and was doing the post treatment with GIMP but the site I used to make the image changed and now produce the same image the other IA do, they all look the same I hate this. So i had to find other ways and I still keep experiencing.

Everything change too quickly except me

Yes, the graphics are really beautiful. They make you want to explore, just to see what lurks around the corner.
I accidentally solved the short adventure in one straight line, way too fast.
So next I tried not solving anything...just wandering around.

I hope to see the next game soon. This is very nice.
