Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

V7.00.00RC0 is available at https://github.com/UKTailwind/CMM2V1.5/releases/tag/v7.00.00RC0

Colour Maximite 2: MMBasic 7.00.00RC0 (release candidate)

3 November 2026. What has changed since 7.00.00b5.

The first release candidate of MMBasic 7.00 for the Colour Maximite 2 is out. The firmware, the manuals, the release notes and a zip of programs for the SD card are on the release page:

https://github.com/UKTailwind/CMM2V1.5/releases/tag/v7.00.00RC0

The same firmware file runs on the Generation 1 and the Generation 2. Unless problems turn up, this will become 7.00.00: please report anything you find here.

Before you update
All options, the library, VAR SAVE data and the flash slots are kept. The program held in flash is not, as the firmware now uses that part of the flash: RUN loads it again from the card as usual.

The highlights
• Programs in C and C++. RUN "name.app" runs a program compiled for the Colour Maximite 2's processor, at its full speed. It uses the screen, keyboard, mouse, sound, files and I/O pins through the firmware, and MMBasic carries on when it ends. Three come in CMM2_Programs_7.00.00RC0.zip:
    ◦ MicroPython, as on the Pico Computer 3, with its display, sound, SQLite, ulab and machine modules. Python runs about twice as fast as on an RP2350.
    ◦ Doom, with Freedoom: about 50 frames a second on a G2 and 35 on a G1, with sound effects and music.
    ◦ ScummVM for classic adventure games, on a G1 too (it borrows the display memory), with three free games to try: the Freddy Pharkas demo, DG: The Adventure Game and Another DG Game. Games you own, such as Day of the Tentacle or Monkey Island 2, go in folders of A:/quest with the names listed in the zip's README.txt (dott, monkey2, kq4...), and RUN "scummvm.app", dott starts one straight away.

• Write your own: the new manual Colour Maximite 2 Loadable Programs explains it all, from a first program to porting existing software, with the tools in the repository's tools/sdk and the free Arm GNU toolchain.

• An FM synthesiser, an emulated OPL3 as on a Sound Blaster:
    ◦ PLAY MIDIFILE plays MIDI files.
    ◦ PLAY MIDI, PLAY NOTE and PLAY MIDI CMD are the PicoMite's commands for its VS1053, with nothing extra to fit. Try PLAY MIDI TEST.
    ◦ PLAY OPL plays the music of DOS games (IMF, DRO and VGM files), and PLAY OPL WRITE lets a program drive the chip itself.

Also
• Faster with a touch screen: with a USB touch screen and the GUI controls, programs no longer run slower.
• RUN after a ':' or in a single-line IF passes its arguments (and MM.CMDLINE$) as written, no longer in capitals with the minus sign changed.
• OPTION FLASH takes 2 to 6, and on a G2 MM.INFO(HEAP) is 8MB less, kept for the loadable programs.

Known problems
• On a G1, the test program rgb121 hangs in MODE 8,4 with three layers shown.

The full list of changes is in the release notes on the release page.

Hi Peter,

Into the darkness, add "option compile on", from 18 fps to 41 fps on rc0
Great, smooth movement through the rooms.
Mauro will LOVE this.
