Arduino Hotel Room Unlocker. Just watching the local evening news when they ran a story about an electronic Hotel Room Un-locker. I couldn't help notice the Arduino logo on the prototype unit they were showing. Dr Google brings up many hits on this. Thanks for the link - I followed it through to the original hacker and read his paper. Very well written and it was interesting to see how a "hacker" approaches this sort of a problem. I've no doubt that his intentions are good. However, I always wonder in these scenarios: did the hacker approach the company first and say "hey, you have a flaw and I found it" thus giving the company a chance to respond. Instead these "ethical" hackers publicize the work to force the company's hand - and, perhaps more importantly for them, to gain publicity. He may well have approached the company first - but if he had I figure he'd have mentioned that in one of his blog posts. I'm tempted to make one of these things to check any hotel rooms I stay in. The other thing I learned is that apparently "ethical hackers" have never surfed Sparkfun (or Dontronics!) and seen the wonders of miniaturization out there. This is a great example why one day I'd like to see a Maximite run on a 28 pin DIP version of PIC32. There are so many projects we could build if we didn't have to solder that 80 or 100 pin part surface mount part. www.elproducts.com |
