Hello all.

I'm just playing around tonight, so I could be doing something wrong.
PROBABLY am doing something wrong.

Used the PI5 to go to the Opera browser website, and download the deb for Linux.
Right-click on the file, set the EXECUTE permissions to "Only Owner", click OK.

Now double-click the deb file, get asked if I want to install it, I say yes/OK, then get the following error message:

The PI5 is trying to tell me to look in the "Detailed report", which is fine, but as I am something still of a Linux novice, can someone point me to where I can FIND that report, and then maybe find out what the issue was.

Cheers!

When you get this sort of thing there is a method that can help. Open up a terminal window (yes, it's command line time!), navigate to the location of the file you are trying to install and run the installer from the command line (you may need to use sudo to get permission to install it). You will usually get a whole load of stuff scrolling up, but it will stop where the error is - or not long after as it tidies up. Whether you understand the error message is something else, but at least it's a start. :)

Awesome, thanks, I will try that.

Quite impressed with Raspbian.
I've tried LOTS of Linux distro's, but this seems really painless to get going, compared to other PC-based distro's.

I guess that, similar to MAC, the hardware is a KNOWN, and so they can write for known hardware, other then generic.

Raspian was pretty good last time I was messing with a Pi. Very solid. I didn't find the urge to try anything else. Mind you, it was a 3B so there weren't many other good options. I've not had a better Pi since then.

@Grogster

Many thanks for your questions which made me research on Pi5.
Reading all this makes me never buy a RPI

Good point.
That was a bit of a schoolboy mistake by me there....

I don't NEED to have Opera, I was just playing around with trying to install it, but I will drop that idea now.

Perhaps Brave is another option.

Either use what's supplied by default or install something from the repo. Life can be so much easier. :)  I still have a soft spot for Firefox.

I currently have Brave on here, with an option for Vivaldi. I rarely need to use anything else. My MX Linux machine is currently set up with Firefox because it happened to be there. :)

Generally, if a site or application is browser-fussy I just go somewhere else and may never look again. If they can't be bothered to standardise I'm not interested, it's their loss. I'm certainly not going to deliberately install a spyware and advertising-riddled browser for anyone. :)
