Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I've been looking at NORD VPN, which seems rather nice, and seems to be recomended by a few different people and places, but is this just advertising I wonder?
Is it any good?

What do the members here use, if they use a VPN?

I use Opera browser, and it has it's own built-in VPN, but it slows your internet connection to a snail speed.  IT WORKS, but it is dial-up speed slow, so I am interested in looking at something else, that IS NOT super-slow when in use.

Happy to pay for the right VPN, but not sure which one to choose.

Any pointers?

I use Private Internet Access. I don't know that it's better than any others but it just seems to work well and gives a worldwide range of servers you can use. I haven't found any incompatibilities with other software so far.

Hello,
I've been using several VPNs in the past. The last couple of years I use the VPN that comes with my McAfee subscription. Easy to turn On/Off, to select the country of origin, etc. Also satisfied with the throughput, no speed problems so far.

Greetings, Henk.

I simply use Tor browser. My apparent location is Switzerland so I avoid the UK "online protection" claptrap.

i use SurfShark, and always found the service perfectly adequate. the cost for me was:
NZ$68.72 (inc GST) for 27 months starting march 2022, then
US$63.62 (inc GST) for 28 months starting june 2024.

note that one needs to 'dawdle' during the initial signup process for them to half the price and offer an extra 3 months. then, when up for renewal, select to NOT renew and just before expiry engage in further 'dawdling' on their site for them to again offer half price and 4 months extra.

cheers,rob   :-)

FastestVPN.com has a life time deal for $30.     I bought that deal 3 or 4 years ago thinking they would go out of business.    They are still in business and expanding the number of countries they have servers in.

It really is a fast VPN and they seem to honor their lifetime subscription sales:

Hi Grogs,

I have been using NORDVPN for several years now and it has been running flawlessly, super easy to use and setup, an .EXE prog to set it up.

Previously I used another VPN that was cheap but would not reply when I had issues with it from time to time,
.They also kept taking annual fees after i unsubscribed from their “service” where i had to get credit back from my credit card company.. they similarly would not reply to my complaints.

Nord is great, buy it through deals which happen every few months so it is cheap..but beware they will auto deduct the “full rate” when the anniversary comes around if you don’t buy another discount deal..

Regards,

Mick (The big one)

Good for you toml_12953!  You have found a trusted source for highly technical information!   If you are comfortable with it, I am glad you have a place to turn to when you don't have other sources to ascertain information that you need!

As it turns out...   I have no interest in the FastestVPN company other than my hopes that the VPN service I subscribed to actually does what they said it will and the company stays in business so my 'Life Time' subscription doesn't vanish.

Because, I don't want the company to go out of business!   FastestVPN really does provide everything I need and more.   And it is reliable.   It just plain works.

And as it turns out...   I really do know a fair about computer security.   Until I retired I was in charge of Platform Security for HP's Industrial Server Division.

I'm telling you FastestVPN is worth a look.   And so far the $30 I spent on a life time subscription have been well worth the money.

But I'm sure some random Reddit poster knows more than me about my needs.   I'll be sure to make sure I'm in alignment with what Reddit says before I buy my next Life Time subscription to a VPN service.

Of course, the original post of that Reddit thread was 4 years ago and the "it works ok" replies are mostly 1 year ago. You may not be able to read much into any of it.  :)

Should I be ashamed ?

I do not use any VPN.
The only habit I (we) have it that we turn off all computers when not in use.
