Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Forum Index : Microcontroller and PC projects : FYI: Notepad++ Hijacked for past 6 months.

Hope this is ok to post: In case someone is not aware, this might be worth keeping a eye out for if you use Notepad++.

The version I tested in my Win-VM (under Linux) in case I might want to use it, was taken from my old Windows install, I used the Portable version and it's from 2021, and nothing updates from the Win-VM.

I've not used Notepad++ for years. I probably have an old install file somewhere. After seeing what's happened to Notepad now I think it's time to run nano on Windows. :)

I am a long time notepad++ user on both Windows and Linux(under WINE). The latest update is January 18, 2026, so it is pretty current, and gets pretty regular updates.

Since I use the Plasma desktop in Fedora, I mostly use Kate, but you cannot beat Notepad++ for windows use. I never use notepad as it seem ancient.

I have a Windows 10 VM on Fedora and notepad++ updates when I am running it.

According to the official link:-
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/news/clarification-security-incident/

Only the "Updater server" carried the hijack IF one HAD used it.

It says NPP itself was never infected or affected.

Personally I only occasionally use NPP, but only the 'portable' version (at the time 8.8.7) on Windows 11 Pro 25H2.

I never allow any Updater and hate any software that does. Yes W11 metrics etc is all disabled, while still system updating securely.

Totally (well almost) unrelated, I went looking for a G-Code editor & simulator the other day.

One experts list had Notepad++ with a suitable plug-in as No 1. Quite surprised.

Worked OK for my first attempt at doing anything remotely serious with G-Code.
