These new micro computers could make good controllers etc, they draw less than 700Ma @ 5V. They are designed to run on Linux which sits on a SD card. The raspberry hardware is just amazing for that price. That you have to load some form of linux is just crazy, at least when you want to target kids to learn programming. Even with a lot less power the Maximite does that job a million times better. Microblocks. Build with logic. |

I don't think it's a bad idea to have to run Linux at all: like anything it's just a matter of getting used to it. BASIC, while teaching a basic understanding (no pun intended) of programming, teaches many bad habits (for example case sensitivity is critical in many languages but not BASIC) and while the Maximite has its place, the Raspberry Pi lets you do a whole lot more (it packs USB, Ethernet, a high-quality sound output and several standard I/Os) for roughly the same price if not cheaper. Both have their merits I suppose, but while the Maximite is a really awesome bit of kit, I think when it comes to price and functionality, the Raspberry Pi lets you do so much more. Capacitance is futile - roll on 2012! |
