hi all
I'm from Italy, i'm a mechatronic engineer and my interest in renewable energy is growing faster and faster everyday! I wanna project a vertical axis windmill, which program do you suggest me to use to optimally design the blades? I've seen ANSYS Blademodeler (http://www.ansys.com/products/blademodeler.asp)... what do you think about it? any experience? any suggestions?
Thanks a lotEdited by Merlino 2008-06-15

Greetings mate.. We are a strange bunch of grapes over this way ,,,, we had to check your credentials out with the mafia ,,that's what took some time .. but you're in the flock now ,,so I hope you enjoy our site.

Don't know much about vertical blades ,,but do have the steelwork curved for the outriggers and the bearings ..

Some advice,,, take a couple hours and do lots of searching ,,start with "vertical' ,, you'll be surprised how much info is on this site..

And,,,,, a few glasses of that "retsina" plonk will help...
still remember that horrible stuff from 1976,hahaha..

Nice to meet you!!
Hehe not sure what a fly by nighter means but i'm damn serious!

We have got a website that i've not immediately mentioned because it's all written in italian, but I'm gonna create an english version soon!

So this is the photogallery (which i'm gonna expand soon) with a few of our photovoltaic systems... slowly move your mouse over the images without clicking and you're gonna see a larger image of the plants!
http://www.seielettrotecnica.it/html/IT/s_galleria.html
Let me know if you like them!

Here you can see my first horizontal axis windmill on the top of the company... the image isn't really clear but i hope you can see something! i'm gonna post some better pics soon!!
http://www.seielettrotecnica.it/html/IT/azienda.html
I hope you enjoy it

btw i hope we can talk a lot to improve our knowledge and my english
bye

Merlino, a guy named Rahai did some tests and found a better profile for vawt.
I´m working on one of these.
And a word of caution: A lot of people will tell you that vawt wont produce any power. And yes, they are not that effective. I choose them because: they are more bulletproof, because of the lower tip speed ratio TSR. (about 1,5 times windspeed for Rahai). They wont make a lot of noise, if robustly constructed, also because of low TSR. Mine, running still without load, is totally quiet.
And they will produce power closer to the ground where you have turbulent winds.
And they might be easier to diy-people.
If you click "johnj" in the following site, pics should appear, Best wishes, johnj

I think you need to look around at the projects there. Doing that will answer a thousand questions. And ask aother 1000 ;-)Edited by johnj 2008-06-19

It's the 2 blader in here.http://www.fieldlines.com/user/vawtman/files

It's going through a transformation has we speak to 4 blades. Will upload more pics this weekend and maybe try to upload a pic here but not sure how yet.
The alternator will be 54pl radial dual rotor.Still workin on that but got the shaft machined to fit.

"darn thing" is just a frustrating way to say i'm havin fun

Hi Merlino, welcome to the forum!

Although my first windmill will be a HAWT, I have been following the progress of people developing VAWT's with interest. The main reason I'm interested in them is that I have 1 acre of land in a semi suburban area. I have a neighbour 100m on each side of me but public reserve land on the other sides. So I should be able to operate one HAWT without upsetting anybody, as long as it's reasonably quiet, and I choose a spot that doesn't spoil anybody's view. But with a VAWT I could potentially have a small wind farm, being low profile and quieter. So performance will be less for each one but I can have quite a few. It's a tempting proposition. I haven't built the house yet so I'm trying to imagine 10 VAWT's somehow forming an attractive architectual feature on the land.

Quite correct Gordon. Thanks for picking that up.

Merlino, I'm in Tasmania which is a small island state on the bottom of Australia. Despite what many international tourists still believe, we are actually part of Australia and no passport is needed to travel from mainland Australia to Tasmania
