What is the best all around motor for generating about 12 volts with a minimum breeze. I am asking because I intend to use a dc motor as a generator. Will a 24 volt dc motor put out the necessary voltage at say half speed? Would I need a 1 horse motor or larger? lottolearn |

Hi need2know I've done some work with the Oatley 24 volt DC motors, and didn't have much luck. Even in a strong breeze, I only got about 6volts. You need to find a high voltage DC otor from a treadmill. These are rated at 120 or 240vDC and will work in a windmill application for 12v charging. Hi need2know [lottolearn], You have to find a DC motor/generator with a decent shaft diameter, unless you intend to mount the rotor blades on a lay shaft and couple to the generator. Just a thought. Gordon. become more energy aware |

I did get an email from a guy in the UK recently who was going to try a 24v scoota motor on a large turbine with a chain drive to step up the speed. I asked him to let me know how it goes. Using a chain drive will mean more maintenance, but those scoota motors are dirt cheap and if it works then it could be a cheap windmill. Thanks GWatBP That is what I intended to do. I use about a 3 inch sprocket mounted on the motor and a 8 inch sprocket on the rotor shaft. lottolearn |
