Hey everyone.
Has anybody used the Plastic Bearing housing that comes with the washers on a mill ?
Just wanting to know how strong they are.

Thanks

Oh they are plenty strong, there is an aluminium extrusion that goes right through it.

You should have read the comments that ensued when I suggested an alternative way to make a hub! Edited by KiwiJohn 2008-06-19

Do you think they are capable of a dual stator Mill ?
I cant tell whether there is a second bearing at the rear of the housing ?
Also I heard you have to paint them to protect against the UV sun.

That's all I've ever used. No sign of any problems and haven't heard of anybody else having found any either. Though some prefer to support the shaft with a bearing just behind the prop.
There are different ways of mounting the plastic/al bearing housing. My first was clamped with 2 x "U" bolts, another 2 were Sikaflexed inside steel tubes, and on the Hydro it is secured by 4 x small bolts opposite end to stator but into the same channels in the extrusion.

For a dual rotor mill, a lot will depend on the manner of attaching the stator & rotors. On my mill in progress (a dual), I used 2 x of the bearing housings once again Sikaflexed inside a steel tube. Here the bearings are at each end of a full length but slightly modified shaft with the stators and rotors mounted same as normal but at both ends.Edited by Gill 2008-06-19

Can you tell me why we have to modify the shaft ?
IF we place the second stator in the correct spot along the shaft, then we can add the hub to the shaft as per the original side. What mods do you do Gill, and why ?

Hi Robbo ,,,Trev from fibreglass and foundry (on the first page) ,has developed very good hubs and bearing housings .. It would be very wise for you to look at these excellant products,,not too expensive ..

Sorry, but some of you guys really should read this forum from the first page ,,Glenn and others have put 10 years work into showing how to build and you guys should really take the time to educate yourselves on past experience from very smart contributors...
End of lecture...

Thanks,
Will have a better look, and learn from your previous experiences.
Thats why you guys are the guru's, - you all have such lengthy employment in the "windmill workshop"

robbo,
I modify my shaft so that each end is the same as far as thread and spline are concerned. This requires a little lathe work then tapping the thread further along where the excess spline was removed. I do not duplicate the thread for the nut as one end is positioned 'to fit'.

This way I can fit a F&P at each end. The prop hub is fitted over and sikaflexed to one rotor

There are however no rules. If you feel you have a way of doing it without modifying the shaft then go for it.
