Hi all ,

Decided to throw on 3 more blades to the Quad as the wind has been light of late , the three blade @ 3.2mt dia driving the 4 stators has been performing better than I thought but needs 10 to 12 klm to keep it spinning and cut in at 12.5 klm @ 104 rpm with all stators in delta , with the 6 blades I have changed one 80S & one 60S to star dropping the cut speed . This will now give a different cut in for each stator , 60S star @ 64 rpm , 80s star @ 84rpm , 60s delta @ 104rpm , 80s delta @ 143rpm which is basicly the same in principle as the staggered stator rewire that Glenn was experimenting with but using 4 unmodified stators instead and hopefully will keep a gradual load on the blades as the wind power increases and not cause stall out..

The 3 extra blades are the first set I built and are smaller @ 2.7 dia and cut different to the 3.2 set but they are all in balance and should be OK for the test period , with the wind mostly below 12k it easily starts in 7 to 8klm and keeps spinning in 5 to 6 and at 100 rpm in 11 to 12 klm was turning 70 watts instead of just starting to cut in with the 3 blade , anyway looks a bit prommising for low wind performance so far ..

I am about to start building my second gen as I have just bought a good lathe so a lot of things that have been bouncing arround in my head can be built and trialled , anyway here's a couple of pic's

Will hopfully have more data to post later in the week ...

Holly cow batman, I thought the last one was big!

I think you'll find the 6 blades work better with the staggered stators. More torque at low speed, though you'll loose a bit in high winds. I've been happy with my 6 blade dual stator, it just makes power every day.

You'll have to post a picture of it up in the air.

Even more impressive Phill. I think that the more blades idea, may be a compromise more people could experiment with successfully.

Look forward to more data and more pics (just greedy)

Good stuff

As promised some more pic's , yesterday with virtually no decent wind but a few puffs after 2pm and fluctuating from 8 to 14 klm it produced 70 watt hrs , the 3 blade would have been lucky to do 10 .. The shot of the piclog shows the graph almost with constant blue under the white which is wind speed .

Hope you like the pic's Oztules , your posts and pictures are allways a great source of info from the smallest to the largest of questions from all forum members , keep up the good work as it must take some time to do some of your detailed repilys . You would probably be interested in the trucks I am currently working on the latest electric drive 300 ton Komatsu Haulpak , 3500 HP V16 cummins 8 turbos driving a dc generator then gets converted to ac to drive 2 GE 16 ton wheel motors with a dump load that probably expells a house hold energy consumption for a year in a minute or so of braking . Anyway if any one is interested I will down load some pic's onto Other Stuff.....

Thanks Phill,
I have commandeered a friends computer for a few minutes to check out the action ... and there in front of me was some good pics of the results so far.

Great looking work on that mill, my only quibble is that you keep your shed far too tidy.

The truck pics would be welcomed by me at least. I just can't envision that much power (DC) going through a phase inverter... the mind boggles.

If I have entertained or helped, then Thats my pleasure.

Asvin,
He has one set of blades @3.2M and the other @2.7M.. thats half a meter different.
My windpower books say that people who do that should be taken out and beaten soundly, and then tarred and feathered.... but they seem to work a treat.

So I have decided to use the books as fire lighters

Hi oztules,

When I saw phill, I suggested to try adding the shorter blades. My thinking was that in light winds, startup torque was the biggest hurdle. The extra short blades would give this. The innner part of the blade gives the startup torque. Once the mill achieved solidarity, then the outer part does most of the work. This is a lot easier than less blades with a huge inner chord.

Six blades of equal length would create a lot of unnecessary drag.

Gordon.

Thats a cunning solution Gordon, I like your thinking.

Hi Oz & Gordon ,

Thanks for the reprieve of being "tarred & feathered" , the 6 blades are going very well even though the extra 3 are a bit bigger than we discussed , I just couldn't bring myself to cut them down before trying them at that size . Had a good wind day last sat , total output was 2.5 kw hrs with the max rpm @ 415 @ 840 watts , a bit down on the previous best max but every day with almost no wind I am making 30 to 100 w/hrs + which is the big win . Have just built a tool to bend the poles and will be giving that a go soon , can't wait to sit down and twist 4 x 42 poles , and have started on #2 quad and hopefully should have it up in a month or so .

Phil,

Thanks for pictures. Most impressive.
