Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone on here has actually ever bought a stepper to use as a low power generator?

I have taken heaps of steppers out of printers lately and have achieved the desired results required for the project at hand. But now we have to purchase about 15 steppers.

The problem is all the steppers I got out of the printers didn't have any data sheets available on the net.

I am just wondering if anyone has any info I could go by.

These are 2 links of steppers that are of interest.

I really like this one it seems like it may be perfect although it is a little more expensive than the others and will have to pay for shipping form ozzie to NZ

The one that I am eyeing up most is the stepper with the order code 8425876, as current per phase is 0.95A and we only require around 500mA of current if this even relates?. But also the best steppers we had were around the same size and had 5 wires, the 4 wire steppers were not as good.

Just wondering if I can judge how well they will perform by the specs such as Phase current, phase inductance, phase resistance or anything like that? As they are around $80 for one and I can't really afford to get one that won't work.

Any information that anyone has on this would be hugely helpful, because no where I look seems to specify this information, they only say how steppers operate as motors but not really how the motor specs relate to generation.Edited by mystiquesbs 2008-08-27

I am sorry I can not find 15 hunky steppers like those under my garage bench!

The rated current per phase will at least give you assurance of the maximum current you can draw without overheating the windings!

If I understand correctly you want 500mA total from all the phases? The stepper will have at least two coils and even though they will not be conducting the full current at every instant I do feel the stepper you are looking at is bigger than you need, just a feeling mind as I dont have a means to prove anything.

Yeh I might have to just bite the bullet and buy one of them. At least then I will have some info to help others that may think of using (bought) steppers.Edited by mystiquesbs 2008-08-29
