hi there, just wondering if any one had tinkered with any of these, i just pulled if off a perkins, that required a higher output alternator.
i know i wont get much out of it, was thinking i could attach a hub to the front, havnt started any testing on it yet think its capable of 15a @ 12v, in origonal form, mite need rewiring would be fairly easy to do as the stator comes out easily
thanks Stu

Looks like a mini F&P.

RPM would probably need to be too high for most battery applications. This was probably on a constant rpm internal combustion system.

neat unit if you could rewire it.

You might not get much out of it, except valuable experience.
If you could place 16 small magnets on the rotor, then you'd have a 3 phase generator. See what your output is and then determine if you need to rewind for lower RPMs. Have fun!

That looks exactly like the John Deere tractor Generator that I used for one of my earlier contraptions, I didn't rewind mine, I just made a blade/ hub and welded it to the pulley on the generator, I was getting all of 3 volts in very strong, tree branch bending, winds. it held up well in high wind, but in its current configuration , it didnt make the power I needed.

I would like to see you rewind it, I haven't thrown mine away and could use the pointers as to how to make it work

Good luck

Looks like it already is a 3-phase generator, having 12 stator teeth and a 4 pole rotor. Building a new rotor with 16 magnets (*and* rewinding) would turn it into a 16 pole 3-phase generator.

Should be pretty straightforward to just rewind it (whilst staying with the 4 pole configuration) to get the desired output voltage at a much lower RPM. Total power output would then be much lower than the current 180W (12V@15A) but could turn it into a nice small genny.

Doesn't it cog in its current form ?Edited by Dinges 2008-09-07

G'day Stu,
Just wondering, are there 4 magnetic zones on each of the magnetic blocks? N,S,N,S per block like the F&P.
I suspect it may already have the 16 magnets Phil spoke of.
was working fine... til the smoke got out.

hi
thanks for all the replys, yes it will be a long term project, im still on a very small block in suburbia, damnit...
gill, how do i figure out if its n,s,n,s on each magnet, i think its only n,s on each magnet..
dinges, yes it does cog also after ideas to overcome this

havnt done any tests on it yet will do some over the weekend to determine its output in current form, will keep you posted, yes its engine driven in its current form so it wont be good for much in its current form

what should voltage at what rpm should i aim for, im thinking about a 3 blade design aproxx 1m length??? open to lots of suggestions on this one,

just want a nice simple design KISS so a rewire will be easy as,

thanks in advance

Stu,
You could try Gordon's method of using a sewing needle. Hold it loosely (without letting it go) by the eye and point the point to ward the magnet. It will be attracted to the densest magnetic areas indicating the poles.

Be careful if you use a piece of broken magnet. The poles may not be where you think they are, particularly with old broken hardrive magnets the results can be very strong but misleading and embarrassing. I have a strong small magnetic cube with the poles marked for this sort of thing now. Any cheap compass will identify which poles are which.Edited by Gill 2008-09-13
