Bryan,
I use a mower blade balancer to get the blade assembly into the ballpark. Then suspend it from the ceiling with a string for the final balance. We always have the highest wind here when it comes time to balance the blades, no matter how long I wait. philb |

Hi all, I have got the blades and boss painted, and ready to balance. picks to follow.
Been really busy building my new workshop ( shed), as I have a deadline for completing it, my father is bringing an other gen set here next weekend, and as Bryan will attest, I have no room for it in the shed I have. The walls are up and I will be putting the roof on tomorrow. I will start another thread in "Two cents" on the Workshop building. I have bought the farm...now I AM powering it... |

Well finally i had the time to balance the blades and get them up. took 1/4 kg of lead on one to get it near to balanced, and the adding of a fly weight.
15 min of flying and off flew the lead...
then down she came as it was shaking the pole like a wet dog, will have to make another blade closer in weight to the other two or shave the heavy two down.
had a big spit and put on the plastic ones I had half made and abandoned for the wood ones, too dark to take a pic, but they are flying well, putting 4 A into the batteries...

Hiya Grolly,
Mate that threaded rod I gave you is what you should use to balance the wood blades. Like I told you put the threaded rod where the lightest part of the blade is. You will probably need some heavier weight than I gave you but you should be able to get it perfectly balanced using that idea. Now didn't I tell you NOT too use the lead as it wouldn't last 5 minutes. Well Murphy sure paid you a visit didn't he . If need be just weld a steel block on the light blade top plate, this will be a big help in the primary balance then use the threaed rod and do the final adjusting with that and make sure you double nut them. If you're unsure I can come up next saturday and help you get them done.
Cheers Bryan
Mate what ever you do DON'T take any material off the bladesEdited by Bryan1 2008-10-20 |

Hi Bryan, yes I did use two rods, one with a "tow ball" hanging off it and the 3 weights and a bit of lead on the other one, and it would still stop about the same place, could not get No 2 past 3:00 or 9:00.
screwing some lead plate halfway up the blade was the only way I could get it to spin and stop in a different place.
btw, in the short time it was up, it flew well, 15A on the point of furl, wanted to hit me in the back of the head while I was pushing the pole up.
Dammm that Murphy guy.
I will give it another go next weekend, hopefully a bit calmer day for balancing, if I get into strife I will give you a call. I have bought the farm...now I AM powering it... |

Hiya Grolly,
Eh mate I'll cut some 16mm plates to suit the blade mount where the light blade is and get some longer bolts. Now I need you to resfresh my memory The plates are 110x75mm and the bolts are M8 aren't they ? Let me know before friday and as i said above I'm free on saturday but not sunday as we have the local show and my daughter has her first entry so I need to be there to see if she wins. I can also bring up my wood working gear and we can re-fit the light blade to another position as the mount wasn't exactly 120 degrees apart this will of caused the biggest balancing issue especially if the light blade was on the wrong mount.
I'm as keen as mustard to get those blades flying as I bet you are after that 15 amps you quoted
Cheers Bryan |
