![]() Hi guys I am still to find a decent motor,this is one I found in a washing machine,unfortunately I couldn't make a shaft within the tolerance required to spin free, So another one bites the dust ![]() I now have this motor,but don't know if it will be okay. My electrical knowledge,is not good, The motor I want to use,is 240v 60/60 hz cl.f 5,3 A. 0,28 hp. 2800 1/min 3 A 0,12hp 420 1/min That is beyond my comprehension, I have tried joining all the wires together,but it still spins free, when attaching a small 12v battery,there is resistance in the shaft. I will try and post a photo of the new motor, as usual any help is much appreciated,thanks guys ,frank ![]() And what do I do with all the wires? 7, I will need a bridge rectifier I think, to light a bulb? I am slowly learning,but still feel stupid asking questions,about simple things,thanks. |

Frank, Your first motor looks like a F&P smartdrive motor or clone; I'd try making that one work, much better chances and less effort required than with your 2nd motor. The 2nd motor is an induction motor with apparently two sets of windings, one as 2 pole (2800 RPM) and one as (I think) 12 pole at 420 RPM. Probably it came out of a washing machine that could do both washing and spin drying ? Most likely your motor is single-phase too. Next time you post a question about a motor, try including a good picture of the nameplate too, as it contains a wealth of information. Anyway, the 2nd motor requires full conversion using neo magnets, it's unusable as is. And even as a motor conversion project it's less than ideal. It's normal that it brakes when you inject DC current into the windings of an induction motor, but that doesn't make it a generator. Another option *might* be to use self-excitation with capacitors, using the 12 pole winding, but not a route that I would go for windpower either. The first photo is an LG, or clone, and not F&P. The alu casting could be useful for mounting for a VAWT. Gordon. become more energy aware |

Cheers dinges,and Gordon, Not the sort of answer I wanted ![]() I cant use the first motor [I wrecked it] I am glad you put me straight on the second motor, I was going to weld it to the mast and attach the blades.[that wont be happening now,[another two bite the dust] I will read all the info on the two sites you have given me,and then source a motor that I can use. My main problem is to much enthusiasm,or in simple terms the gung ho method.build first modify later. As I have said, I will never understand the complex side of electricity. Mind you I have learned something over the months I have visited this site. So once again thanks guys. I have some research to do now on motors, I am slow but I am getting there ![]() |

How much did you wreck the first motor? If a bearing assembly was your problem then you might like to take a look at this where I described how to make a bearing holder without machine tools etc. |

Hi Kiwijohn,The outer drum got bent,and the magnets fell off,also some damage to the bearings, I will be able to get another similar motor I think I have been looking at this one, amtecs 3 phase induction motor mot am-h090lz ip55 star or delta config 415 2840 rpm 3kw 6.1 ampsflange mount.....................do you think its worth buying. that information doesn't really mean much to me,it is on uk ebay. thanks for you intrest,cheers frank ps I will keep in mind your advice on the bearing holder |

Hey mate - keep on keeping on!! Amtecs are meant to be quite good for wind turbines. Have a look at this http://www.tlgwindpower.com/ametek.htm if its a PM motor, it'll be there. The 38V ones are meant to be good too, but the're not mentioned here! I'd chuck the AC motor back on e-bay and go for the amtec - but hey, WTF do I know? I can't even get the cogs off my motors ![]() |

Hi Marcus, Give it to me I will remove the cog for you, I will wreck the motor in the process tho ![]() I have lots of bits of motors, I dismantled a rotor to see how it was made,that was a lot of hassle,[and I am non the wiser] For weeks the windmill sat in the garden with no wind, and now its in bits in the shed,the wind is finally blowing, I am going to check out the scrap yards for a machine with a motor,like the first one I got. I only want to charge a few batteries,and light a few garden lights, [at first] ![]() p,s its not a good idea to put the wires on your tounge, whilst rotating the shaft. ![]() |
