I've been keeping an eye out for a induction motor suitable for converting to a windmill alternator. If you have access to a lathe, an induction motor conversion is a worth while project, so long as you can find a suitable induction motor.

I found a good-un. The local dump has a recycling center, and I picked this beauty up for $10. I took my multimeter with me to test the phases before spendig the money, all measured good, no shorts to earth, and the bearings felt good.

Its a 900 RPM 0.75kw 3 phase motor. The shaft diameter is 25mm, rotor is 90mm diameter and 65mm long.
When looking for an induction motor for conversion, the lower the rated RPM the better, lower RPM means more poles, and more poles is good!. This one is 900rpm, and has 6 poles per phase. Each coil is easy to access, so I can seperate the coils and connect in series/parallel or parallel if required.

Next I need to decide on what magnets I can ( afford ) to use, Neo's or Ceramics.

VERY nice find Glenn

I make a habit of snooping around industrial bins whenever
I'm at a supplier or wholesaler. They throw out so much stuff!
It should be mandatory that all waste is sorted for re-use then
recycled if deemed too far gone for anything.

Looking forward to a Gizmo special conversion...

It should work ...in theory

Nice find Glenn

Don't be afraid to load that up with good magnets. You have lots of coils to draw from.
What voltage are you looking for?

I have (2) 6 pole motors that are similar i just aquired. I'm anxious to get the rotors cut down, but i can't seem to find any desent magnets around here. I'm looking for 12 volts.

Keep us posted
