Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi guys. Am building a windgen. Sick of watching the blades spin, lol. Next phase is to incorporate the F&P motors into it. Can't afford the batteries yet, so I'm wondering if it's safe to drive the F&P motors without being connected to batteries? I believe it's not a good idea to do so with car alternators because you can cook the diodes (or something). Is this true and, if so, does it apply to my windgen as well?

Cheers, Russell.

G'day Mr.Sleepy,
Firstly, welcome to the forum.

As you've been running your windgen with no load, and it has not blown itself to pieces, it'd be OK to connect the f&p with no load. Be aware however, that at no load the open circuit voltage, especially if not modified, can go sky high and this is dangerous to man and beast.

Don't kill yourself or your kids by mistakenly thinking the output is battery voltage only.

Have fun with your, what I'm guessing is a VAWT.
How about a pic??

Thanks Gill. I think it's a VAWT if V is for vertical? Saw similar on a website somewhere today that gave it some weird name but can't find it again. Thought I bookmarked it!

Actually, first BIG wind, I had to stop it as it was about to self-destruct. Stopping it was pretty scary on it's own. Beefed up the frame and had it through some BIG winds since with no probs but could be better designed. Gets a bit of a slight wobble up which tends to 'govern' it, lol. Next time I'll have it right

How/where do you upload pics or clips?

Russell,
Yes you have that right, VAWT is a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine and of course a HAWT is a Horizontal one.

Pics can be posted using the icon of a tree with the up arrow, second from right in the Post Reply window. If you don't do it, pics will be resized to 500 pixels wide also press 'Enter' for a new line between each pic.
The Forum software is user friendly so if you forget, it does it for you automatically.

You definatly don't want wobble limiting the RPM's... Personally, I would rather that thing spin super fast then wobble. wobbling while spinning creates alot more force then it looks like. Anyways, I can't wait to see a pic! I love hearing about people who have there genny's mid process.
Don't you think Free/Renewable energy should be mandatory in new buildings?

Russell,
I like your choice of 3 offset savonious rotors. Framing is certainly not overdone.
There's a common problem with VAWTS in the real world, by the time they get big enough to do some real power generation, they are too big to put up at a height where they can catch the wind.
Mind you this mob did all right with their 4 stacker Here.

I like the multi colour effect. When you give it a paint job I'd keep it similar.

Keep up the good work.
