G'day, been following the plans on this site for an F&P turbine and its coming along great. I have a question from this page http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/fp2e.asp

How do you know how far to slide the shaft in before locking it? Since the raised lip in the middle of the shaft doesn't hit either bearing I'm not sure of the precise positioning of the shaft except for looking at these pictures here and here

But I was under the impression that the spacing between the stator and rotor had to be spot on, so how can the shaft position be arbitrary?

Hope I haven't convoluted things, cheers.Edited by caesius 2009-01-24

Hi Caesius

At the stator/hub end if the shaft, there is that big nut that screws onto the shaft, screw that on first, then slide the shaft in to home. By having that nut on, the shaft will be sitting in the correct place for the hub and stator alignment.

That said, you can get away without that nut if you dont have it. Fit the shaft onto the magnet hub, so it looks like a wheel and axle, then slide the shaft into the bearing, hub over the stator. Watch out, as the hub gets close to the stator it will want to pull out of your grip and onto the stator. Once in place, the hub will self align onto the stator due to the magnet attraction, its quite strong! Then all you need to do is tighten the grub screw in the front bearing.

Your turbine should sit against the front bearing if possible, so its the bearing and not the grub screw or hub/stator magnet attraction thats stopping the shaft move backwards in strong winds.

Hope all that made sense
