Hi guys...what would be the best wiring configuration for my Savonius VAWT?...the two F&Ps are 42 pole each and the rpm range I normally get is 60-300rpm, but averaging mostly around 100-180rpm...Cheers, Russell. |

Hi Russell How big is the savonius? Is it the one in your avatar picture? Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Hi Glenn, yes it is...I hope to lessen the cogging by slightly offsetting the mounting of the two F&Ps but I may need to reconfigure their wiring first to suit the rpms I get...I saw that the standard factory wiring for the 36 pole units was somewhat applicable to VAWTs but I have 42 pole units...I'm not sure exactly whether I'll use a 12 or 24VDC system yet, but that shouldn't matter too much regarding the wiring should it?...Russell |

Hi Russell Do you know what F&P type you have, there are 3 different wire sizes in the 42 pole range. This page might help... http://www.thebackshed.com/windmill/WhatFP.asp With a savonius the cogging isnt a problem when it comes to starting in light wind, they have more than enough torque to get going with a standard F&P. The only problem you may have is noise, I had a F&P on a Lenz VAWT and it was very noisy until I decogged it. If the windmill isn't too close to your home, I wouldn't worry about it. they're 80 series (0.8mm wire) |

An 80 series should be fine for 24 volt use in good winds, 12v use in light winds. You wont need to modify it at all, just connect a 3 phase rectifier to the F&P output leads, real easy. You should have enough power there to drive two F&P's Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Excellent, thanks Glenn...are 3 phase rectifiers usually incorporated in regulators?...would you recommend anything in particular or have any info?...cost is typically an issue, but i prefer reliability...thanks, Russell |

Have you got an old car alternator lying around? http://www.thebackshed.com/windmill/articles/AlternatorRect. asp Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Will I need 6 of them?...one for each output wire from the 2 F&Ps? |

2, each one has 3 inputs. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Ok...and no, I don't have any alternators lying around...is there a schematic or list which shows what I need to safely and efficiently charge batteries with my windgen? |

Hello Glenn and Russell I'm new in this forum. I'm looking to attach the stator to a vertical turbine, but the axis shall be fix. How you interconnects the stator to the unit and the rotor to the blades. Thanks Nomar The future will be off the grid. |

Hi Nomar, I have a 1:3 pulley configuration at the top of the VAWT being driven by the blades. I have turned and threaded an adaptor to connect the shaft to the pulley and also allow removal of the shaft if I need to later for any maintenance or change the pulley belt. I'm using the whole F&P shaft with a motor at each end and fixing the stators to the VAWT frame via a bracket. There are probably better ways but it's what I have to work with. I will post some pics (or I could send them via email?), which may clarify things, as soon as I get some batteries for my camera. Cheers, Russell. |
