Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Guys

I'm getting a few reports of page timeouts on the forum, and I've noticed a couple of members posts have failed to go in. Until I sort this out, it might be an idea to type up your message in Notepad before posting onto the forum. Another trick to avoid loosing your typed up message is, just before you hit the Post New Topic button, use you mouse to select your text, right click and copy it. Then if the post crashes, you can paste the message into a new window.

I'll let you know how I go sorting this out, lately it seams like every problem I fix is replaced by another.

I've tried turning off the Email Notify function to see if thats the cause. Email Notify sends out hundreds of email messages every time someone posts a message, so it may be the cause of the system time outs.

This is just a test, I'll turn it back on later.

And can eat your bandwidth ...
On some hosting companies there is a limit of maximum sent mails...
No problem for me if you turn off permanently (maybe actual server have to deal with too many sites).

Hi Oztues. I found out the servers are all set to GMT, so for us on the east coast the clock is 10 hours out. You can change the time difference for yourself in the setting tab at the top of the screen. I've been meaning to try that puppy linux, looks perfect for a old laptop of mine.

Yeah Bruce, looks like the email notify wasnt the problem. Hi Vasi, yeah emails can be a hog, but I have a 30G limit and its still under that.

Thing is, a few months ago when the site was hosted at a friends place, who happens to be a home run ISP, I didn't have any of the problems I've been having lately. I had a virtual server to my self that I could tune and it run pretty good. Since moving away all I've had is drama's.

I'm actually considering moving back. He's changed his business around and now wants to concentrate on hosting websites, and he's increased his bandwidth. Apart from the occasional down time of a couple hours, his service was pretty reliable.

Eventually I'll be in a situation where I can get ADSL, and then I'll go back to hosting the server at home where I can keep an eye on it.

Dinges ponders deeply... and concludes that Oztules is a Time Lord.

He probably has a Sonic Screwdriver as well.... That would explain a lot.

Hi Glenn,

Funny, I thounght the same yesterday :

Well, Glenn is starting to have problems on large popular hosting companies. On old server was no problems...

I had some problems (sort of). First, I had my site on a free romanian hoster (funlw65.lx.ro) and a lot of problems because it was a shared server, with hundred of sites there. Then, last year I had my site on a paid host (www.morisca.net), it had few clients, was cheap and fast (very fast) and no big problems (few at the beginning). Now, I let the administration part to Google , using Blogger and Google Sites. Of course, for a forum, you need a dedicated server, with full control.

I thought many times, why you don't try a SMF forum, on apache server, with php... you can set it at home for learning/testing purposes at least...

Hi Vasi

Yeah I've seen some nice apache based forums lately, but I've customised the code on this ASP based one so much I wouldn't like to start again. Besides, I already have one old forum still online from yesteryear, dont want two of them.
The forum code itself is fine, its the hosting thats causing the problem. It is a shared server set up, so the slow downs and time outs could actually be coming from another domain on the same server. When I test my local copy its fine, responds instantly.

When I had the site on my mates servers, he had a virtual server set up for me with its own dedicated IP. I had full control of the web and mail servers, and I had them running pretty good. He's still got the virtual server file, so I can fire it up at any time and copy the new data/posts over to get it back up to date. I might do it, I'm so tired to stressing about these down time problems.

Thanks Gizmo, I have returned the time line to it's proper temporal position.

Dinges.... that sonic screwdiver.... seem to remember breaking it off in a lock on a telephone box somewhere in London....

I've had to disable log in and new registrations for a little while. Apparently some of the servers at the hosting company have been suffering brute force attacks, which has caused this site to slow to a craw. Thats what heppens when you use shared servers, if one site goes down it can affect other sites on the same server.

Again, sorry for the problems, but I really cant win lately.

OK, log in is back up, but no new registrations for a couple of days. The forum may be down for maintenance a couple of times over the next few days but this is ok.
