Hi Folks I have been busy planning the location of my wind generator. Currently the best place for it at the front of our garage. This is 3.6m high at the apex. It will look like a flagpole that can be tilted down by a pivot point at the bottom. The winching arrangement will be inside the garage with the electronics/battery etc. The Mast will extend above the roof of the garage by approx 5 meters. Unfortunately setting up guy wires will be difficult due to the driveway being diectly below it. This brings me to pole types. I am looking at some 76mm OD ERW pipe that looks to be very good. Its stronger than standard galavnised piping and is approx the same pricing. Unfortunately it comes in 6 meter lengths and I need about 8 meters. So I will have to cut and join. I was wondering if any of you engineering folks out there can offer some advice re welding this type of pipe - and any experienced that you have had with it. Many thanks Dave Coding Coding Coding.. Gday Dave Is a pity it does'nt come in 8 mtr lengths. When joining pipe, you need to grind a 45 degree chamfer onto both ends of the pipe, sit both ends of pipe into a peice of angle iron so it is straight. Tac weld at 2 spots 180 degees apart, give it a spin to make sure it is true, tap it with a hammer if needed to get it straight then go for it. Overlap the welds a bit where you need to stop and start again, try to do this while the weld is still hot. The join should be as strong as the original pipe..........cheers Pete |

If you inexperienced with tower construction, I might suggest looking here. They have several pages on towers. The pipe in my own towers are connected by making a sleeve and welding them in place. The sleeve is made by cutting off about 1/3 meter of the original pipe and splitting that up one side. I hammer the sleeve on both ends of pipe and weld in place. For heavy pipe, I welded strap iron across the two pipe joints, then weld the pipe round to finish it. philb |

Hi Dave, The proceedure pete has given is good , you should also leave a mm or 2 gap between the pipe faces and not champher the whole face of the butt joint , you need to get good weld on with no sl*g inclusions with full penitration ..
