What washers brands in the states use these motors? I've heard mention of Whirlpool and Maytag but can't find anything diffinitive. I know people who work at the landfill so if I knew what to tell them to look for I could start sourcing them on the west coast.

I'll do that. I might also stop by a local appliance repair place and see if they have any information (and if they might be a good source for me) on specific other brands and models to look for.

I have and am considering it, however, I want to see what I can scrounge locally first. After all, with today's economy it's always nice to know of another income source to fall back on. If I can find a good source of these (heading to landfill) I might just stockpile them. They'd be the new gold.

As an appliance guy I can give ya a couple. Fisher & Paykel is sold in the states, I havent seen any with the 36pole though. Whirlpool top load "OASIS" machines have a motor almost identical to the F&P 36pole. LG front loaders also use the motors. The maytag front loaders used a DC Pulse motor but It would need modification. Those are actually very well built motors, but the circutry that drives those machines are not the best. As for new maytag, Well any washer under the name, Admiral, Maytag, Kirkland, Estate, Roper, Kitchen Aide, Kenmore, Galaxy, are all whirlpool built. BUT, I believe only the oasis is a whirlpool built washer with that F&P style smart drive motor. The Shaft on the Oasis seems to be much much stronger the thr F&P style. I will try to get a post going with some pics of the ones I have been able to scrap out. The LG's I saw require more modification to work because of the way the coils are mounted. But I haven't been able to scrap one for my own personal gain yet.Edited by readyakira 2009-07-19

Yeah any photos would be appreciated, in your own time. I'm sure there are many different types of motors out there that could be used n place of a F&P motor.

My appliance guy for the last 30 years lives down the street from me and
I'll ask him if he can get free motors. He hates F&P dishwashers with a
passion, so I'm sure he'd know where to find scrapped ones if anyone
does.

I have no idea how much these puppies weigh and maybe it would be
foolish to ship them all over the planet, but if they're not all that much
and I can get my hands on a pile of them, perhaps we could work out
something for those who want them, eh?

I don't make electricity with my windmills, so I have no experience there.
If someone will reply, what I'm wanting to know is do you rewind the
coils? If so, maybe the coils could be trimmed off and just the iron guts
could be shipped here or there. That'd reduce the shipping weight
considerably.

Well, let me know. Meanwhile, I've put in a call in to my friend.

Nobody has replied yet as to the motor windings. Are they left intact or cut
out and re-wound in a different configuration?

The reason I'm asking is I could easily reduce the shipping weight with my
saws-all if the coils are headed for the bin anyway.

Hello

I have just bought an LG Direct Drive washing machine in the UK and it has the F&P style motor in it.

Very easy to remove, just the shaft bolt and then six stator bolts.

The bad news is that the bearings are pressed into the rear plastic cover, and as far as I can see are pretty useless.

Also, the shaft uses a spider onto the back of the drum and after spending 2 hours getting the drum out, splitting it and trying to undo the bolts I am not sure it is worth the effort. Angle grind the shaft off so you have the splines, then turn up something to fit sems the better choice to me.

My motor had 36 stator coils with laminated core 16mm wide. Rotor has 12 magnets each with 4 poles, ie 2 north and 2 south.

The coils and drum with magnets are a required component. The coils aren't rewound, just how they are connected to each other is modified.

I don't know if you've seen the F&P info here (.http://www.yourgreendream.com/diy_fp_remove_from_wm.php) but it shows how to remove from an F&P so I'd assume the LG and Whirlpool Oasis are about the same.

You don't need the shaft or mount in most cases. As stated the magnet and coil assemblies are the imprtant parts. Of course I am keeping the shaft and alluminum housing the bearings sit in for ease because I don't have easy access to a lathe. On the oasis when I strip it for the motor I take the hub and coils off then smash the majority of the tub with a sledge hammer. The oasis seems to be a pretty brittle tub and cracks off pretty easy. I then pull the shaft and bearings and all that is left is a small amount of plastic and the alluminum housing. You can then ignite the plastic and watch it all melt off clean. Hopefull tonight I will find the time to get some pics on my phone.

I'm finding some model numbers for Whirlpool washers.

WTW6200V WTW6800W WTW6500 It looks like all the Cabrio models.

Where are you guys in the states sourcing these types of motors? Are you working with scrap yards or going directly to appliance repair places?

We are almost neighbors here

I have been looking around some and called up Standard TV and Appliance. They refered me to their service center in the SE side. They will sell each piece seperate. How much I could not get the guy to quote to me.

Like I said I am in the appliance biz so I come by them from time to time. I only have collected 2 f&P and 2 Oasis so far. btw the F&P has two different shaft styles and like I said I will have to get some pics up... I have some on my phone just need my internet at home working now...

Don't you think Free/Renewable energy should be mandatory in new buildings?

Here's what I've found out so far:

My appliance guy no longer services F&P dishwashers. He sent me to a
friend of his and it turns out the friend doesn't like them either.

The friend had a good suggestion though; look in your area for appliance-
repair shops that service Fisher Paykel (sp?). Just google it and slip in your
region.

Once you find the folks that service them, ask where they dump the un-
repairable machines and you're in high cotton!
