Out on my sales route at work I decided to inquire at a factory I service about whether or not they had any surplus electric motors. The "parts guru" got big grin on his face and pulled out a 6 page list of motors stored away in their warehouse! I was astounded.

There were many ac motors and almost as many dc motors. They were listed by manufacturer, hp,rpms and voltage.

Whats better 1/4hp, 1725rpms, 90vdc? OR 1 hp, 1800rpms, 180vdc?

I need a better idea of what to look for. I couldnt look at them directly because they were stored away in a 6 story automated warehouse and getting them down requires calling the maintenance dept. and shutting down some robots.

any tips?Edited by daggit 2009-08-09

I would say that it depends on you skill level and how much work you want to put into a wind mill. How many watts do you want to shoot for? The DC motors could make a good mill and so can the 3 phase motors, if you have them. Single phase motors are not generally recommended. We need more information.
