Hi well im slowly moving into the wind turbine mood for a little project and hopefully you guys can help.
At the moment i have 12 UPS batteries being charged by solar but wouldnt mind make a back up wind turbine.
Im thinking of a vertical one but wondered about plans and also looking on ebay im going to struggle with permanent magnet generators, i looked at stator ones but all i can see is the ones for motor bikes.
So can you help with:-
1)Plans for a small is (max 1m high blades) vertical windmill
2) What type of generator??
Hopefully you can help pls

ian-
that's wonderful that you would like to dabble in wind power. vertical widmills (vawt) can produce power, but typically spin at low rpm and are many times geared via belts and pulleys to create higher rpm. this gearing robs power therefore you need a lot of torque out of your vawt wich means a larger swept area. basically vawts can produce good power, but it is a dificult task to take on for a first wind genny.
a typical horizontal wind turbine (hawt) might be easier for your first. look for a motor out of a treadmill and search the board for "pvc blades" this combo uses easily found parts and can add power production to you set-up fairly easily. ametek motors work well too.
how many watts is your solar set-up? are your batteries 12v?
good luck!i pee more than once before flushing, and don't have to flush at all up at the ranch!
