Hi,

You CAN wire it like that, but it will not work

What you need to do, is connect all the negative leads directly to battery, and connect the positive leads like you have pictured. So that the positile leads are isolated from the battery by the rectifier diodes.
If at first you don't succeed, try again.

Janne has instructed you correctly.
this diode set up is 3 phase all circuits are independent
and if the diodes are not blown out (Defective) then there will be no short circuit. the output from the diode bridge
that is normally the big post on the alt'ntr hooks to the +
battery terminal.
