Hi, I apologise well in advance for my newbie question. I have been reading the posts for weeks and take my hat off to the time, ingenuity and perseverence of the supporters of this forum. I love the idea of generating clean power but I don't have the money up-front to buy solar panels. I am keen to try and build a wind turbine and have just bought a F&P washing machine motor. (used) The link is to the picture of a rewired stator and I was wondering what the output voltage is likely to be using this rig. Stator Star I am supposing it could be used in either 12 V or 36 V, but not 24 V. Do you recommend filtering the DC coming out of the rectifier using caps? Has anyone sucessfully used old truck, tractor or forklift batteries for power storage? I bought Hugh Piggott's book and he suggested forklift batteries but there may be a big difference between the common forklift battery in the UK and in Australia. Andrew |

I assume this is a F&P. The pic you show is good for 12V. This would be a 2s7p stator wired in star. The intended loading will determine if a capacitor filtering system needs to be installed. Matching of 2nd hand batteries is required. intended operating speed of the rotor will dictate the best matching. Gordon. become more energy aware |

Hi Gordon, thanks for the reply. Do you mean that if you are charging a battery you don't necessarily have to smooth the DC? Could you recommend an F&P stator configuration capable of 24 V output in an exposed, windy area? Andrew |

The battery is equivalent to a really big cap. I used series100 wired in delta. The series80 rewired 7s2p is almost the same output. If you add a Cap voltage doubler[approx 470uF 250VDC back to back caps], improved low end performance and loading will result. Be careful with rotor more than 2.4m dia, as this will likely overpower a single stator design. I just gave away my F&P stuff and have moved to all AxFx designs. Will be making another from aluminium eventually. There is something about a windmill that spins when the anemometer doesn't. Under 1kph winds have pretty low energy. Doesn't seem to worry the AxFx, with around 25rpm, and ready for the 1-2W puffs that go straight to the battery. The F&P was a good phase for me and I cut my teeth proving the cap arrangements with it. Hope you make a winner to. Gordon. become more energy aware |

Hi Gordon, thanks for the reply. I am reading and learning as I go but I think I will follow your lead. "Cut my teeth" on an F&P. The metalwork is coming along (F&P) and the whole house smells like resin from the solder! Andrew |
