Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

hi a dude gave me some supper old steel case ni cads in 32v form and just wondering what type of voltage reg/voltage they require for connection to my 36w solar panel? tried the single phrase m/cycle rectifier/regulator that i use on the same panel but on a car batt that shuts off at 14v but goes way past that on these ni cads, any ideasmatt down south

How many volts does the PV panel put out? 17-20 Volts. This won't charge a 32 Volt battery.
Search for "SMPS inverter" maybe with MPPT to get a good match between the PV panel and getting the most into your battery.
Also, suggest some research into issues with charging Ni-Cad versus lead acid, ie constant current/constant voltage charging.
Good luck

it doesnt really matter what sort of battery it is, if its 12 volts the charging voltage will always be the same, between 13 and 14 volts roughly.

Oh, perfect advice to offer someone - if you want them to toast their batteries!
Most manufacturers specify VERY SPECIFIC and voltages. Mine for example are 2.28V per cell. Cook them at 2.4V/cell and they will be ruined. Undercharge them at 2.2V/cell and you will ruin them.
To the original poster: check with the manufacturer for those SPECIFIC cells. NiCad cells can be quite fussy.
