Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Increasing rpm via larger to smaller pulley. Why is it not done on small units? I understand that the use of bearings and a belt increase the amount of torque needed to turn the windmill to start it but if you were using a 1 to 3 ratio ( number out of the air) in higher winds of say 15 mph wouldn't the extra speed of the generator produce twice as much power?

If we wait for higher winds, our batteries can be in danger. We don't have higher winds all the time, and we are connected mainly to batteries, not to windmill.Edited by vasi 2007-04-03

Great idea!!
If you are using a large turbine "blades" and lots of wind. Low winds have little to no power, so you must use the most efficent turbine you can make. If you used
belt(s)to drive your generator you will need a great amount of wind just to get it to turn. "Belts need about 15 percent of the wind power just to get them to moving".

If you live in windy area then it would not matter that much.
