Three of us (one a marine electrician one a fitter/toolmaker and me (jack of all trades) are making up 3 units - one for each of us. The prototype unit (modified version of the Backshed design) is working under test with great results. The FP motor was rewired as explained in the Backshed article.
The steelwork was simpler than described in the article, eliminating the new bearings and carriers by milling the FP shaft assembly down to a tight sliding fit into 65 X 65 RHS and locking it in place with a 6 mm tapped bolt. The biggest problem was finding something to fit the FP spline, but an old clutch plate did the trick, with the blades bolted to the rim, the blade ends locked against the centre section and a steel ring clamping it all together with through-bolts - could be better but at least workable until we find (or make) something better. The cast alloy units would be great but too expensive for us. (DIY labour is cheap)
The blades were made from 150 mm UPVC sewer pipe, cut lengthways and to shape with a jigsaw and profiled with a (cheap Kmart) electric plane and belt sander. The blades were painted with an epoxy etch primer then with hammer finish epoxy enamel. My main problem is that UPVC gets brittle under 5 degrees - at my place in the mountains, we go to -10 sometimes, so it looks as though alloy or wooden blades will be needed for mine - the UPVC is fine for warmer areas.
One unresolved problem - had anyone found anything that is a clearance fit to cover the back (wiring side) of the FP stator? Although varnished, it is open to the weather and any flying debris. I figure an old-style hubcap, or maybe a potplant tray might work but I have not found anything yet. It either needs to lock onto the stator OR fit over the shaft and turn with the rotor.

G'day Alan,
A few pics sounds great look forward to your post.
A 20l oil drum has a good clearance fit over the hub and in length suits a twin hub on a standard shaft perfectly.
(my current project)was working fine... til the smoke got out.

which vehicle did you find the clutch plate suits the F@P shaft spline?

You will find it from Toyota Corolla 1967 to 1974 KE3 model as l have one use for my 3ph 415volt genrator however l am not too sure if clutch plate will fit into F & P shaft spline but tail shaft york will fit into F & p spline and other ideas that gearbox shaft will not fit well and it too tight causing F & P hubs spit as l have already done my self Regard Ian
