Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Yes, I haven't changed the zone file so the serial number would not have been incremented. Perhaps there were some propogation delays/errors since the change? I have been running the DNS for the backshed since Glenn got the domain name, the only difference lately being the shift of his server from his work to here, which was simply an IP address change to the relevant records to point to the new home, nothing else was modified.

Hard taskmaster indeed..

Gizmo said   I've just sent a test email to both Gill and KiwiJohn using the forum email thingy. If Gill and KiwiJohn could send an email to eachother and reply to eachother, that would help testing, see if they get through ok.

Mail is another matter, as Glenn has absolute control over the entire server. The server is virtualized and Glenn has full external access. I dont touch it unless requested to do so.
Glenn if you need me to assist with any troubleshooting just gimme a call..

Gavin...

Glenn, having just registered on the forum I'm not sure how the website intergrates to the mail system but I can confirm there does appear to be some issues with email. I got the welcome email fine, no problem there. However if I tick the "Email Notify" option when posting, this does not seem to work. The last exchange between Ross and myself resulted in no emails coming through to me at all even tho I had this box ticked. Are other forum members seeing this behaviour ?

I've been getting them all.... so looks like it's intermittent or selective....

Thanks guys, I think All smoke and mirrors this DNS stuff, runs on magic and pixie dust. But at least someone found a use for Linux Sorry Ross, couldn't help myself.

The email issue was unrelated, think the emails were just not getting answered or squashed by a spam filter somewhere. Its very easy to miss an email these days with all the rubbish that appears in our in boxes.

Yeah I get all the Email Notify emails ok, but I have heard some members have missed a few from time to time. The forum code uses the good old reliable JMail component to handle email, using mail.thebackshed.com as its mail server, in this case MDaemon 8.
I have a feeling an invalid "send to" email address or time out will cause the jmail component to return an error, which is ignored by the forum code. Its not a 100% garantee that any forum messages will get through.

The forum code is a complicated beast, written in a style very different to my own and hard to follow, but I'll have a look around to see how it handles the Email Notify functions.

Just by accident typed in the URL without www.

http://thebackshed.com/windmill/forum1/default.asp

And got back this!

Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)

Whatever it is, Glenn, contrary to Gavins claims that everything is "perfectly valid", it is *NOT* working properly. I'm not planning any further diagnostics lest I step on any toes, nor am I going to say what is (or isn't) right, wrong or anything else save "it's broken" as other members have already reported.

Hey Guys,

Ok, I've found the cause. It wasn't DNS it was the webserver itself. I have fixed it on Glenn's behalf as I dont like to fiddle with what's not mine. Glenn, I will contact you and show what I did to fix it, it may come in handy next time you setup IIS.

Regards

Thank goodness for all of you network gurus as it is all I can do to set up a home network and keep all the computers going. Nowdays it isn't too hard as they have all the setup wizards but when I started a home network you had to hunt down the spots and type in the numbers. Routers and high speed internet are wonders I take for granted now but I can still remember before they became common. Heck the first computer(?) I programed used punch cards for data and jumper wires for programing.

Thanks Gav.

The penny dropped when Ross showed the web page he got with "Bad Request". I bet it was something to do the the "host header name" in the IIS. It understands where to point www.thebackshed.com but not thebackshed.com
First time I've used host headers to set up more than one site on a single ip.
