Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Jarbar

Nothing has changed here. The "Email Notification" of new messages has caused problems for some members before. All I can put it down to is mail servers blocking the emails send by the forum software. Sometimes the ISP ( Your internet provider ) will make changes to their email servers in an attempt to reduce spam. This may mean it thinks any emails sent from this forum are spam so it blocks them. There isn't anything I can do unfortunately. The same problem pops up occasionally when forum members send messages to eachother.

The condition sometimes returns to normal, you can try sending an email to your ISP to let them know about the problem.

Hi
I read somewhere that the F&P rotor should not be directly exposed to sunlight. However, I see many pictures here of F&P based generators without protection for the rotor. Perhaps the pics were taken during the experimental stage of F&P projects ?
My question is hence, whether I need to cover the F&P or not. And what about rain going inside the stator and rotor ?

thanks

Faust

Hi,, after you have finished re-configuring the wiring ,,varnish the stator's wiring and body throughly,,a couple times.. This will protect from rain Etc.
The rotor,,It's a good idea to give this a couple coats of paint to protect it from the sun -I use any spray can paint ,don't think it matters ,,you will probably bring it down and do it again in six months or so .

If you are placing your bridge rectifiers up the top ,,then enclose these in a plastic or aluminium case ,,but drill a couple small holes in the lowest part of the case ,,because modern rain gets into cases ,guaranteed, even goes straight through Aluminium ,,betcha
Oh,,and all those "outside" cable connections--seal them up real well

Thanks Bruce
So, essentially, a cover is not required for the F&P it seems. That saves me a bit of work...
cheers

My new F&P wind power gen starts rotating at a windspeed of 20 km/h and stops when speed drops to 12 km/h. F&P is de-cogged as recommended. I recall, the unmodified F&P would start at 36 km/h, so I guess my F&P is OK ? Propeller is relatively small (85cm long aluminium sheet blades - no airfoil). Any comment advice is welcome.

cheers

G'day Faust,
The improvement in start up speed indicates the F&P may not be a problem, whereas your 85cm blade seems small even for a VAWT that may be really tall. (This is a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine [VAWT] we are talking about here. Right?) Maybe you could post a pic so we can gauge the general proportions and design of your beauty?
That would be great.

was working fine... til the smoke got out.
