Hi the "world"
I'm new to this site so hello to everyone also new to the idea of using wind

My first question is, has anyone used a LG washing machine direct drive motor yet to genny a bit of power?. I would be interested if anyone has.

I noticed that you "mates" down under use the Fisher/ Paykell motor, sadly I thinks it's a bit in short supply up here in "Blighty" unless someone knows different

Hi Rogan, welcome to the site.

I first saw a LG motor, or a least a picture of one, a couple of years ago and they do look like a good candidate for a windmill. Like the F&P's up there in the UK, the UG's are a rare beast down under.

Hi Phil
To many models to list, but have a look at this site they sell the spare parts, there are one or two pictures, trouble is you can't copy them ( copyright)

Hi,

From what I remember there has been a legal challenge by F&P to LG's use of this motor, so it looks like they are very similar. Just try to put it into a lathe or a much weaker drill to turn it and read the volts it puts out.

Just a suggestion from a newbie.

Yes Dom very similar but not identical.

From what I gather all LG machines in UK are front loaders with a lot being driers as well. Maybe it rains a little over there?

Typical machine.

I'll be keeping my eyes open for these on my scrounging forays too from now on.

Nice photos Gill where did you manage to get them from?, the only available web site's over here have copyright on them The site that I posted is part of a group called "connect-distribution" who have sewn the market up in the domestic appliance spares industry , their web sites usually start www.4******.

Can't recall where, just Googled around a bit.

I recommend a programme called HyperSnap but there are many others.

Should you come across one(or several) of these LG washers, take note of the stator as it appears as if there may be two types. That spare parts mob you talk about seemed to refer to one stator as no longer available and another that is.

Our F&P stator can be found in 4 types with the hub or rotor in 2 basic types.

The 3 early stator changes were in the wire gauge and number of turns per coil. The last change was a total redesign brought on by a different magnet shape, that for us, overcomes the dreaded cogging resistance.

Only one type of LG hub sorry 'Rotor' was indicated so I'm guessing that any stator differences will be in wire gauge and turns per coil.

Hope you can acquire a few. The potential is there.

Good luck.

Interesting stuff,, I think the magnetic rotor hub is pressed steel ?? I'm finding the F&P plastic rotor is a bit flexable and also I'm finding after meny install/removal operations the threaded bit is wearing .

If anyone in Australia can get pic's or know of particular dryers/washing machines that have these ,please let me know and I'll go hunt one down ,thanks

I am in the right trade to aquire a few, I am a electrical engineer working in the domestic appliance industry only trouble is these LG's have only been here for few years, up to press they are quite reliable except for the drum bearings, cheap pumps etc. Motors are a bit of a rarity, but I will find one to experiment with and hopefully a few others in the near future

G'day dwyer,
Did you check the model numbers against those in the 1st image of my post?
Here they are again:

I imagine LG produce other types of washers as well so do check first.
Also I'd stay clear of driers.
What I thought I said was that many of the above models of washers also have a drier function in them as well.
That is a washer and drier as one machine. (maybe only in the UK???)

I have no idea of what models have been imported and sold into Australia. Let the buyer beware!

I'm keen to hear of any successful find.

Good luck

If it's got a motor slung under the drum at the bottom and has drive belt then it ain't the right one RoganEdited by roganjosh 2007-10-01

I used to sell these when I worked for an electrical chain in Cornwall UK - I believe the direct drive models were called "Intelliwasher" , not sure they made a tumble dryer with this motor , washers only I think.
