I keep seeing old washing machines being left out on the curb (to be collected by the council), but have yet to come accross any F&P machines.
Does anyone here know of any other manufacturers product(s) that are roughly equivalent to a smartdriver (that can be used for wind or micro-hydro home projects)?
I'm in Sydney atm btw :) Maybe |

Fisher & Paykel is the manufacturer. (F&P)
SmartDrive is the washing machine type.
And to many model numbers to list
So the washing machine will always be clearly marked:
Good luck & Keep Looking. was working fine... til the smoke got out.

I found an almost unlimited source from one of the big
chain white goods outlets. As a new washing machine is
too big for most people to carry home, the company
offers a home delivery service. As another service they
will take your old machine back to the depot. I discovered
a vast collection of major white goods stored outside the
depot. Asked them about it, and they said they wait till
the pile gets too big to manage, then contract a guy to
truck them to the dump. I asked could I take some of them
away for them - not a problem.
In one swoop I got 6 F&P motors, two of each type.
Also there was plenty of other white goods that I could
take that would have been sweet for parts or conversions.
Dryers, fridges, freezers, stoves & ovens. All very useful
in our field.
sPuDd.. It should work ...in theory |

Grab the heavy microwave ovens.... good transformers for converting to other things. Hard to overestimate their value. ( I happen to value them higher then the F&P motors.... but different needs over here.)
The newer Microwave ovens use pwm coils... not as exciting for my money.
Has anyone used the controllers from these washing machines? Wouldn't mind playing with the 3ph drivers from these things.... none over here as yet sadly.

Warwick,
You should find plenty of F&Ps during kerbside pickups. F&P have sued LG for using PM motors as drivers for washing machines, but I have never seen a dead LG washer as yet as they are new models.
Good luck!

Hiya Oztules,
Mate if you ask Dennis he has a few of the F&P washing machine controllers, I asked him about them yesterday for you but we didnt get very far as I had to get my wife back to the hospital as I didnt want the baby to be born on Dennis's kitchen floor. I'm sure between us we can get a few of them sourced for you.
cheers Bryan |

Congrats on the new baby. All that fun is yet ahead on me (but not too far I think).
Maybe you'll need to generate extra power as a source of revenue to offset the water excess charges!
In regards to getting parts, I'm happy to wait until I can find something on the curb as since I'm living in a flat atm its more of a warm-up exercise for me.
I.e. I want to practise gutting the washing machine, setting up a basic generator and then have a bit of a play getting an automation/testing interface set up.
The idea being that when I get back to Tassie (dependant on jobs) I can jump into a project and hit the ground running.
I'll probably just bite the bullet and dedicate a chunk of the next free weekend to go hunting through the suburbs until I find the right washer on the curb! :) Maybe |
