Hello folks just found your board and im a noob.Im enthused about wind and solar and am looking to build a small scale turbine(maybe 5 ft blades) just to charge a couple deep cycle marine batteries at my cabin for use with an inverter and have good wind .Bin surfing alot and still need info.Seems to be lots for sale on ebay but im leary ,the pm motors seem to be the best to use. http://cgi.ebay.com/INDIANA-GENERAL-30-VDC-PM-MOTOR-FOR-WIND -GENERATOR_W0QQitemZ290213262758QQihZ019QQcategoryZ121837QQs sPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hi, that motor looks a good place to start. Your 5ft blades (i.e. 10 ft diameter) would be more than adequate I expect.
Of course you cant just mount the blades on front of the motor as the motor bearings would never last and you need to protect the motor. I used a motor similar to that with a single bearing to support the blades and about 10 inches of shaft coupled with a piece of rubber hose to the motor (which was inside a shelter). It worked well and last time I saw the present owner he was still enthusing about it using it at a remote site to keep batteries topped up for some computer equipment.

Hi jg,
you should contact the ebay seller and ask for clear details from the nameplate on the motor.
I could only read 30V. there appears to be duty cycle power output etc.
This is a brushed motor, with 4 brushes. There will probably be 4 ceramic magnets bonded to the stator. I would expect <100W as a direct drive windmll generator. A 5 foot blade may be overkill. To get 9V when spinning the shaft with fingers indicates a high volts per 1000 RPM rating.
The 5/8" shaft is too thin to mount a hub and blades, so KiwiJohn's suggestion would be appropriate. Keyed shafts are prone to seizure, maintenance could be a problem down the track.
Hey guys thanks very much for the info,im going ask for more details before i bid on it ,i assumed the pm motors had no brushes just magnets, still learning. And the blades for it might be more like 3 feet longjg
