Crew, I thought I'd share this 'event" with you.
Some big storms came this way 2 days ago. I couldn't lower the mill because it was too dangerous.
The mill was pumping out it's max and furling almost continuously... I went inside the workshop and watched the volt meter to see when it was lowest ,,so I could safetly switch the 3 phase "shorting" breaker.. First attempt ,,mill just kept speeding,,so quickly opened the switch, not wanting to do any harm to the windings(dual,parallel,.8mm 4 halves paralleled.)
Next attempt, threw the switch and mill came to a complete stop,,then 1 revelution per 2 seconds or even less,,this is good ,I thought.completly under control as many times before...

Next morning ,still a stiff breeze,,got up and switched the 3 phase breaker off,,,ahhh, mill not turning ,,what's up???

disconnect wiring ,,mill still not turning,,must be something up the top???

later in day ,,lower mill on winch ,,everything looks good.. remove rotors,,no burning of coils.. remove stators and go to workshop, measure indivual phases---all 1.2 Ohms ,,all six of them.. measure supply cable to workshop ,,appears to be ok.

remember the thing acted like a dead short--now what do you think could be wrong???

How does it feel now if you spin it by hand?

Hi Glenn,,well, I'll have to install the stators again and connect them ,,--I'll give that a go and see..-unfortunately,,I had the 3 ph breaker "on" when I lowered it and didn't "open ' it to try and turn them whenit was down ,,so ,,I'll have to re-install to check that..

Maybe with shorting out it got so hot it melted some insulation off the wire? The first place I'd look for is any connectors.

Just a thought though you may well have found the cause already.
was working fine... til the smoke got out.
