One problem I face at my home is what type of tower I *can* or *want* to put up in my backyard. A monopole would be best, but it is too expensive. The guyed tower is cheap enough, but I don't like the idea of cables coming out in my backyard where children will be playing and gardners will be mowing lawns. I have seen for a 30' tower guyed cables spread out at 30' radii. Can these cables be brought in closer if they have the breaking strength for the added stresses? Can the tower still be stable if I bring them in to 15' radii, or is this getting dangerous? |

How about a Marconi Rig? The general principle is to increase the effective diameter of the 'mast' by adding spreaders as Marconi did for his 'wireless' masts. I assume the smaller the area of the base the heavier it must be to withstand overturning forces. |

So would the guy cables come straight down off of the T at the top? What do you all think of this lattice tower at this link here I am looking under products at the 30', 21 square-foot top rated for 80mph. |

In a Marconi rig guys are taken from the top of the mast down to 'spreaders' or 'cross trees' then at a steeper angle towards the ground. ![]() |

Interesting, but it starts to look like a cheaper version of a lattice tower. How steep of an angle can one make with guy wires before the structure is not stable if the wires have the appropriate tensile strength for the force vectors? |

Use a yacht as your model, some have quite tall masts carrying considerable loads with a guy footprint no wider than the width of the hull. |

How about placing two supports at 90 (or 120 degrees). I plan to use steel tubing for my vawt. http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/FORUM1/forum_posts.asp?T ID=980&PN=1 Would this work? Dimensions? cheers, J |
