Hi all, The Noob is Back! My washing machine broke the other day (2 pound coin trashed the drum), so first thing I did was get all excited and rip out the motor, but its a bit of a weird on. Its shaft has copper coils which spin inside some insulation, under which there are more copper coils. I dont think there are any perm magnets there...lower down the shaft there is a small ring of plates that look like little magnets that sin between two retractable permenant magnets. The actually touch and there is loadsa dust from where they wear away, they are spring loaded to keep them in contact. There are loadsa wires, I found one pair that have a resistance less than 1 and when |I spin the shaft I get voltage readings but they are weird, they go from positive to negative... Any Ideas? Should I rip the coils off the shaft and get some perm magnets glued on? label doesnt say much... ACC type 20584.509 DC-EL CL.B/F 230/240V 300/15000 rpm heres the pic: |

Well theres no pic...done something wrong lol! 
And actually, the darker colour you can see on the body between the two alloy endcaps, are perm magnets! |

That looks like a generic series wound DC/AC motor, seen them before, but I could be wrong. The two retractable magnets you talk of are carbon brushes, they make the electrical contact with the armature. I think you will find that dark area is actually laminations, are there coils wound around it when you look inside? These are not much good as generators, but make powerfull motors for making workshop tools ( sanders, drills, etc ) Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. Ahhh, so thats what carbon brushes are! No good as a generator hey...well the search goes on! On the inside of the laminations there are coils, then a white plastic sheath, inside that the coils that are mounted on the shaft. Will I need a controller to run this motor, or if I just hook it up to the mains will it run flat out? I'm such a noob. I thought the'd be 2 wires on the motor, not 10!!! Now I'm lost, I could have handled 2 lol! Its one hell o a learning curve! |
