I have got a couple of little motors to mess around with (100W, 24V DC).
However when they arrived, the shaft has a gearing on it - these motors were from an electric scooter. I thought I should be able to remove the gearing as it has a circlip - but it's stuck fast! Do you think they might have epoxy resined it to the shaft? Should i just hit it with a hammer?
Failing that, and I can't remove it - what's the best way to mount the blades to this geared shaft. It isn't as simple as just using another geared coupling as this has a sort of washer as part of the gearing on the face side!
I have tried to attach photos - please bear with me and thanks for looking!

Bad photos!!

Hi Marcus,if you have removed the circlclip just try prizing the spline away with a screwdriver
Or undo the the two screws and the rotor should come out with the end casing,
I am still waiting for the wind to blow,I have put my dynamo with blades on a small pole,
I dont have a lot of faith in the dynamo,
So have been experimenting with a windscreen wiper motor,in the shed,
spinning on a drill I read 250v,I can just about light a 12v car headlight bulb,a led lights okay.
I am completely clueless about how the whole electric side ,
Can I boost the output amps? with something.
My problem is I think on vehicle related charging, 30000v
out of the spark leads is pretty shocking, but not anough amps to kill you ?
I need to uprate my amps and lower the volts.
and also need some wind

I know this is not wind related,
but the kids love rolling the grass on it,
It was a junk push lawnmower,I was going to throw out,
So removed the cutters added the frame and steering,
Put a drum on to drive it,I made the petrol tank out of a empty oil can,
I am just having a break from ripping auto wiper motors apart,
I am going to piggyback two motors, add some blades and see what happens,Edited by frank133 2008-09-23

Ahh Frank - if only it was that easy just to remove the circlip and prise it off.
I think they must have stuck it or welded it to the shaft!! Grrr!
Also taken it to bits, but can't remove the shaft from the rotor. These motors are brand new, and I don't really want to goose them - if they're gonna be no good, I'll put them back on flea-bay!!

Hi Marcus, the motors I have been playing with are windscreen wiper motors,
like this one,it will light a led straight from the motor.the output shaft looked a little thin so the red tape ,covers a bearing I added, and the metal brackets cable tied for now, support the bearing and the shaft,{I hope].The amount of electric motors lying around is amazing, whether the are any good is another story,
I have just rescued a electric garden strimmer from my mates wheelibin,
Its got a motor init so might be of some use?
My windmill turned today, there was a slight gust of wind, and to see the blades turn was cool, with a light breeze, all the windmill has been doing is turning into the wind,Take care mate frank

I'v had a bit to do with them. I found the the pullys where stuck on with loctite or something like that. Had to take to it with a small gas torch to get it off. I struck a few with internal faults in the armature too. Also the chineese are rather slack on commutator gap undercuting.Edited by Robb 2008-09-23

Hi everybody, I am a newbie to The Back Shed and have enjoyed reading through all the forums. I have picked up quite a few good points and so far have made 4 small wind generators with single blade and 3 blade props.

Hi Marcus20VT

In answer to your problem, get hold of a small puller and it will come off with a little effort. I have the same motor which is out of a gopher or scooter. I had the same problem removing the gear so I went into the local motorcycle shop and they lent me a small puller which did the job. Hope this helps.

Hi bigtk,
I am new on this forum as well,
The mill I made has finally started turning in the slight wind this morning,
It gets up to a good speed,
I don't know if its putting any power out,I have connected it up to a small battery to see if there is any difference in the battery voltage later.
I am going to mount the smaller motor piggyback and either drivebelt it, or gear drive it from the the dc dynamo,
I will have to do it that way because I think the shaft on the small motor will bend with the weight of the blades.
I will take it all to bits now I know it works, then clean and oil the bearings in the dynamo, fit the small motor on top ,then see if it still works,

AARRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!! - Still having trouble with this - have broken my mates gear puller trying to get it off
Surely I don't have to get a blowtorch or grinder to it - what would the heat do to the internal wiring?

Hi oztules good call,Marcus grind it off
I am taking two steps forward and one back,
I have decided the dc dynamo is not going to work.
The windshield wiper motor I have been playing with looks promising.
I visited the local tip,and struggled to remove the motor out of a washing machine,
It has eleven magnets and looks pretty new.
I couldn't get the shaft out of the machine ,so will be going back today with a bigger hammer and a axe.
On a brighter note the blades I made out of pvc pipe,
are working pretty well the turbine makes a nice garden ornament.
And some people actually think I know what I am doing I will have to dismantle this first turbine,
and rebuild with the bigger motor.
So I am back to the beginning once more.
I will let you know what happens,[if anything]
