i just finished rewinding a small fan motor from a car (the one that drives the cabin fan) it had 12 turns per coil of 15 gauge wire (i think looked about 15 gauge) i rewound it with 50 turns of 24 gauge (just fit into the slots mind you) and i now get about 2 volt with a quick spin of the shaft with my fingers and 16 volt easy with a slow spin with the drill (about 300-400 rpm)

this motor gave me only 2 volts at 570 rpm (the slow setting on my drill press) and 4 amps shorted (8W)

now i get 16 volt at 2.5 amp at approx 300-400 rpm (40W)

not bad for a 125W 12VDC motor

why did i spend 8+ hours rewinding a motor? I'm not sure but it was fun and a good learning experience

i think I'm gonna try one of the 24V 300W scooter motors next

ok i was a lil up the creek lol i should have tested it in my bench drill before i posted the output

its realy 9.5VDC and 1.5A at 570 rpm (14.25W)

still thats better than whats it was before the rewind lol

maybe i'll try it with some fast blades?

Hi absinthe

Sounds like a good excuse to sit in front of the TV. Rewinding is just like knitting

I would be interrested to see how you go with rewinding the 300 watt scotta motor. I tried to get one of them to work with its standard windings, no luck, only about 6 volts max. But a rewire should work.

If you ever have a spare motor, see if you can press out the shaft without damaging the stator. The idea is, 3 or 4 of those motors connected in series would work for a 12 volts system, so if you could give each motor a new shaft that extended out the back, you could couple the motors in line. Just a crazy idea.
