I need some advice from the experts. I have a 36 pole 48 volt �hub motor� from an electric scooter that I am trying to use as a generator for a windmill. I have plenty of room on the inside of the stator & was thinking that it would be neat to put the charging regulator inside the motor? Ideally the regulator would monitor the battery & when the battery reached full the regulator would �short� the stator windings providing �magnetic braking� for the windmill. Please let me know what you think.

It should work provided the blades do NOT have enough torque at low speeds to burn out the wire.

Its been my experience that maintanance is much easyer to carry out on the ground. For that and a number of other reasons I actualy removed the rectifier from my small commercial mill and run AC back to the house.

Hi Wes

Having the regulator up in the windmill head, while neat and tidy, can present some maintenance issues.
The alternator itself is pretty tought electrically, it would take a pretty major lightning strike to damage your average 3 phase alternator. But rectifiers and control electronics are easily damaged, so having the electronics at ground level could mean a system that was easier to repair after a lighting strike.
It also means making adjustments to the controller would be easier.

With any windmill installation, the most dangerous time is the raising and lowering of the tower. By "keeping it simple" up there at the top of the tower, there is less need to drop the tower to repair/adjust something that could be kept at ground level.

Also, if you were a service agent for the windmill, you would appreciate it if the sensitive bits were at ground level.
