Hello everyone,
I'm very new to the world of wind power but the bug has bitten me and I'm anxious to get started. I've been reading this site and have learned some things but you guys that know what you are talking about use terms that I have no idea about.
It seems that the F&P is a rotor and stator from a Fisher and Paykel dishwasher? I found one online and have seen a picture of it but dont know what to look for and which ones are the good ones that you want.

What is the best design for me to get my feet wet and where can I learn more about it? Of the F&P motors which are the ones that a person should look for?

What about a one wire alternator from a boat? Anyone using any of these and what mods do they need?

Sorry about all the questions I have many, many more but just would like to learn as much as I can as fast as I can at this point.

Thanks very much!
Roy

The Fisher and Paykel motors come from washing machines. There are LG washing machines with similar motors to these that may be more common in other countries.

Ideal motors are low reving permanent magnet with no cogging. The F&P has the first two requirements and with a bit of work the third can be achieved.

There are also a limited number of whirlpool washers that are currently using this design of motor.
Don't you think Free/Renewable energy should be mandatory in new buildings?

Thanks for your replies, if I'm looking at a motor will it have a plate on it stating the rpm's of that motor? I've only seen pictures of the F&P online but they dont look like any motor I've seen in the past. Looks like a housing will have to be built and a setup made to support the rotor.
Anyone have a link to a site where I could see some pictures and read about the complete conversion?

Thanks very much!

Well Roy I believe this is THE site for discussion of the F&Ps! The washing machine includes just about all you need to mount the motor, including shaft, bearings and bearing holder.

You are right in that they do not look like a common electric motor and they are in fact a form of permanent magnet stepping motor. But they do have characteristics that make them easily usable in wind turbines.

Hi Roy,

I think you will find that searching this site will give you more than enough info to make a start. I doubt anyone will give you a step by step instruction guide. You have to put the pieces of info together to make it happen. This is what most have done. If this is beyond your skills, then you may just be better to part with some crinkly.

Gordon.

If you guys dont mind questions when I get stuck then I'll do the reading.
Thanks very much!
